Technology areas and how they reach deployment

4D Maker develops technology across four connected areas and takes it through the engineering required to install and operate it outside the laboratory.

Technology areas

Each area covers development from early feasibility through hardware that can be built repeatably.

Area 01

Advanced Materials

Material formulation, processing, and characterization work carried from bench scale toward repeatable production.

  • Formulation and process development
  • Structure and property characterization
  • Scale-up from bench to pilot quantities
  • Material qualification for device integration

Area 02

Sensors and Energy Devices

Device design, fabrication, and bring-up for sensing and energy applications, including the electronics and packaging around them.

  • Sensing element and device design
  • Energy device fabrication and assembly
  • Signal conditioning and readout electronics
  • Packaging, housing, and environmental protection

Area 03

Robotics and Automation

Motion, control, and automated handling built to run in production and field environments rather than on a lab bench.

  • Mechanism and end-effector design
  • Motion control and instrumentation
  • Automated handling and test fixturing
  • Controls integration with existing equipment

Area 04

Product Engineering and Commercialization

The engineering that turns a working prototype into a product a customer can buy, install, and operate.

  • Design for manufacture and assembly
  • Adapter development for existing equipment
  • System integration and customer installation
  • Commercialization and transition planning

From research to deployment

The path a technology follows from an open question to hardware running at a customer site.

  1. 01

    Research and Discovery

Define the technical problem, survey approaches, and establish what has to be true for the concept to work.

  2. 02

    Prototype Development

Build early hardware to test the core mechanism and retire the highest technical risks first.

  3. 03

    Product Engineering

Move from a working prototype toward a design that can be manufactured, serviced, and repeated.

  4. 04

    System Integration

Fit the technology to the equipment, controls, and interfaces already in place at the site.

  5. 05

    Customer Installation

Install, commission, and hand over working hardware in the customer's operating environment.

  6. 06

    Commercialization

Plan production, supply, and support so the technology can be delivered beyond the first installation.
